Cape May-Lewes
depend on tourism for a great part of their economic growth and stability. Cape May’s resurgence as a major vacation destination was fueled by the energy and enthusiasm of preservationists and entrepreneurs who left behind previous jobs and careers to restore many of the Victorian homes along the shore for use as Bed & Breakfast inns, restaurants and shops. Cape May has many opportunities for future economic growth due to its natural beauty, wealth of natural resources, available workforce and availability of land for development and redevelopment. This makes it a strong contender in the market for new businesses. Tourism adds close to $2 million dollars to Delaware’s economy, and Sussex County, where the town of Lewes is located, is a leader that has created year round events to celebrate the culture, history and natural beauty of the area. Farming, especially the chicken industry, also remains a large part of the economy in Sussex County.
